is hard to find these days. I have been around the scene for many years but have yet to find another masterpiece such as Hiranos' Hellsing series. The "visual medium" of anime to me is a true art form.
I've been through Gantz, Angel Sanctuary, Elfen Lied, Ergo Proxy and Vampire series such as Trinity Blood and currently Vampire Knight. Emphasis is on visual styles and story line....
Suggestions, anyone?
Yours truly,

It's a shame masterpieces don't grow on threes, anyway here are a bunch of my favourite animes both series and movies.
Baccano! (Highly recommended!)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
His and Her Circumstances
Gunslinger girl
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
Cowboy bebop
FLCL
Sayonara Zetzubou Sensei
Almost anything from Satoshi Kon (RIP)
Millennium Actress
Perfect Blue & Paprika (All of them are highly recommended!)
The Girl who leapt through time (Highly recommended!)

Here are some of my personal favorites.
Baccano! (Like Markus, I highly recommend this series. It's awesome.
)
Durarara!! (Made by the same guys who made Baccano!)
Kara no Kyoukai. (A series of 7 fantastic anime-films.)
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni/ When they cry.
Boogiepop Phantom.
Claymore.
Black Lagoon.
Serial Experiments Lain.
Blood +. (Good vampire-anime.)
Witchblade.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Highschool of the Dead.
Wolfs Rain.
Gurren Lagann. (Wonderfully over-the-top mecca-series.)
I'll have to recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion too. Although I have mixed feelings about it and the series has some major problems, it's still a must-see for anime-fans imo. I also recomend Rah Xephon. A similar series that I am watching now, but dosen't have the same problems as Eva.

(If anyone know about a site with good avatars and/or sigs of Hellsing, Drifters, Battle Angel Alita, Black Lagoon or Witchblade, then please tell me.)

Re: "Good" anime...
Thanks for the suggestions, guys!
I will look into some of those.

Re: "Good" anime...
Here is a little selection of anime series I love.
Monster : For Urasawa's scenario and the general "german mood" that sweats out of this work
Ghost in the shell : pure SF, 3 films, 2 seasons
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! : For the humour
Great Teacher Onizuka : A classic, and the Cresta cars' massacre
Kaiji Ultimate Survivor Janken-real tv-blood. A masterpiece of suspens.
Noir : Girls, guns, Paris and Corsica, Yuki Kajiura's music.
Madlax : Girls, guns, exotism, Yuki Kajiura's music. A Noir like, but different
Black Lagoon : The mercenary mood in south east asia, makes me think about Shadowrun 4
Elfen Lied : Oups, you already saw it
Full Metal Panic ! : Comedy, mechas and romantism, a must.
Ah! My Goddess : They're sooo nice !
Neon Genesis Evangelion As mentionned above
School Rumble : Probably the funniest school-comedy I ever saw.
Spice and Wolf : A cute fox goddess and an interresting development about garbaining and medieval monetary systems.
Tentai Senshi Sunred : Hilarious !!! (And simple, but efficient graphics )
Nodame Cantabile : Comedy, classic music.
Akagi : Mah Jong and suspens, by the same team from Kaiji ultimate survivor.
Bartender : A brief history of alcohols and cocktails. Very pioneering. See it with a cocktail in your hand (in the best case, the same as the one presented in the episode
)
Maria Holic : A Yuri parody
School Days : A very heavy psychologic pressure.
Legend of Koizumi : Very very very idiotic Mahjong stories, featuring politics !
---
I agree that currently it's difficult to find a well-worthy serie, but this winter session is better than the previous years :
I'm watching :
Gosick : Sherlock Holmes-like investigations
Maho Shojo Madoka Magica : I would define it as an "adult magical girl". Featuring Yuki Kajiura's music. I love her. Very much.

In the case of the great circuit of Al-Hazred, the terminator was originally a black goat, sacrificed at midnight with a silver knife touched only by virgins, but these days we just use a fifty microfarad capacitor.

Re: "Good" anime...
Oh, perhaps I'm just a little bit late
Well, so i will speak up for some of the titles already mentioned.....
Black Lagoon is definitely one of the best on the lists.....a must-watch...
Gunslinger Girl is pretty good, too
Elfen Lied has.....well enough evil gore for at least two stories.....
Samurai Champloo has a lot of character......
Regretably I'm not through all of the good animes listed (like Ghost in the shell or Noir ) but they get good critics....
I just want to add Black God (Kuro Kami) to the list.....it's not good but I enjoyed it nonetheless....
And don't watch School Days....that's just some crazy shit....nothing anybody ever wants to think about.....
Hope you enjoy your anime
